How to play Think Rarer

Think Rarer is a trivia game where the obvious answer is the weakest one. Each question asks you to name something (a cheese, a dog breed, an NBA team) and you score by how few other people would have said the same thing.

A round

Scoring

Every question has a full list of valid answers. The most common answer is worth 10 points and the rarest are worth 100, on a log scale so the middle of the list is spread out instead of bunched together. Until enough people have played, “common” is estimated from how often each answer’s English Wikipedia article is read.

What counts

Your answer has to be on the question’s list: random rare words don’t score. Capital letters, accents, “the” and small typos are ignored, and common alternative names are accepted (“Lab” for Labrador Retriever, “USA” for the United States). Very short answers have to be spelled exactly, so one name isn’t mistaken for another.

FAQ

How does scoring work?

Each question has a list of every valid answer. Common answers score 10 points; answers almost nobody thinks of score up to 100. A round is 7 questions, so the best possible score is 700.

How do you know which answers are rare?

For now, by how often each answer's English Wikipedia article is read over a year — popular things come to mind first. As more people play, scores will also use what players actually answer.

What counts as a valid answer?

Anything on the question's answer list, which is built from Wikidata. Capitals, accents and small typos don't matter, and common alternative names work. Made-up or off-topic answers don't count, but you can try again until the timer runs out.

Can I play more than once a day?

Yes. Unlimited mode gives you a fresh set of 7 questions every round, as many rounds as you like. The Daily is the same 7 questions for everyone and changes at 00:00 UTC.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up. Your settings and daily score stay in your browser.

Is Think Rarer the same as Krillion?

No. Think Rarer is an independent game with its own questions and answer data. If you enjoy Krillion or other rare-answer games you'll feel at home here, but Think Rarer is not affiliated with them.
